Masterpieces of the Gipsformerei
Goethe was among the very first customers of the Gipsformerei of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, founded in the city in 1819. One of the oldest and largest institutions of its kind, to this day it continues to produce and sell handcrafted and often hand-painted casts, each created with artistic precision. A journey amid the world cultures from prehistory to the present is made possible through the Berlin art manufactory´s unique inventory, comprised of 7,000 works. Included in this collection are many moulds whose originals have either been lost or now exist in a much poorer condition. This book introduces both the wide spectrum of offerings, as well as the historical and cultural development of this fascinating institution.

The full array of original casts produced since 1820 by the Replica Workshop, part of the National Museums in Berlin, is revealed in this series of catalogues. This particular catalogue contains photographs of our collection of casts of Egyptian monuments, with detailed descriptions and specifications of each object. Our storeroom of moulds, from which customer orders are produced, is a veritable treasure trove. Of particular value in this area are those moulds that were made of the monuments centuries ago. Since then the monuments have been exposed to the weather to such a degree that their details are often so faded as to be barely recognizeable. Casts produced from these old moulds often bear much more detail than the originals. The works listed in this book date from the 6th millennium BCE to the 2nd century CE.

The full array of original casts produced since 1820 by the Replica Workshop, part of the National Museums in Berlin, is revealed in this series of catalogues. This catalogue contains photographs of our collection of casts taken from monuments in Asia Minor, with detailed descriptions and specifications of each object. Our storeroom of moulds is a veritable treasure trove. Among the oldest and most fascinating objects held in the collection are the moulds of Hittite rock reliefs produced by Karl Humann at Yazilikaya (in 1882) and on Nemrud Dagh (in 1883), as well as the casts produced from the moulds made by Otto Puchstein and Karl Humann of monuments in Maraš, now Kahramanmaraş (near Zincirli, 1882, 1883). Thanks to these original casts, historical, in-situ finds have been preserved for posterity that no longer survive in this form at the original site, having been damaged or in some cases even destroyed in the century since the moulds were made. As a result, this particular catalogue amounts to much more than an index of the objects available for casting - it documents the richness of the collection and the special focus placed historically on the sculpture of Asia Minor by the Berlin museums.

This catalogue contains photographs of our collection of casts taken of Greek and Roman free-standing statues, with detailed descriptions and specifications of each object. Our storeroom of moulds is a veritable treasure trove. Of particular value in this area are the moulds that were made of the artefacts centuries ago. Since then the statues have been exposed to the weather to such a degree that their details are so often faded as to be barely recognizeable. Casts produced from these old moulds often bear much more detail than the originals. A good example of this can be seen in the 60 frieze panels from the Column of Marcus Aurelius in Rome. The works contained in this publication span a period of 3000 years, ranging from the female idols of the Cycladic culture to Roman portraits dating from the 4th century CE.

The value of such moulds, especially from a research perspective, lies in the fact that casts can be made of objects which are no longer well preserved in the original form, often being severely worn, destroyed or lost. The moulds featured in this brochure are copies of works from the Byzantine Empire, the Middle Ages and the Baroque.

Our storerooms contain over 600 moulds of objects from Europe, as well as 88 moulds of the antiquities from Troy. The originals date from a period of 700,000 years up to the 11th century CE.
In addition, we also have moulds of objects from the pre-Columbian Americas, Asia, India and Africa, which are not included in the catalogue.
