Portraits from the Mughal Era
Part II
The Collection of South, South-East and Central Asian Art contains a significant collection of Indian miniature painting. A selection of masterpieces from this particular genre are on display throughout our regularly rotating exhibitions as testament to one of the collection's strong points. The portrait is a particularly popular genre in Indian painting, which is why from August 2010 to January 2011 the museum will again be showing works of Indian portraiture dating from the time of the Mughal Empire (1526-1858).
Alongside classical portraits in the Mughal style (that include an exceptionally fine medallion portrait of Emperor Shah Jahan), examples of the Rajput schools of painting are also on show, including portraits of horsemen from Kota and Deogarh, executed in captivating colours and with great vividness.
