Inlaid Patchwork in Europe from 1500 to the Present

Leeds Art Gallery is after Berlin (Germany), Vienna (Austria) and Bautzen (Germany) the fourth and final venue for the Inlaid Patchwork Exhibition. There are in total 14 objects on show and lenders including Germany, Poland, England, Scotland and Wales.

All Inlaid Patchworks are made out of woollen cloth. The woven and felted material is cut in shape and assembled into multi-coloured images. Unlike wood or stone inlay the forms are not laid in, but stitched together without seam. In this way the front and back are the same.

Inlaid Patchwork was mainly used for representative wall-hangings in both religious and secular context, but it was also used in practical items such as horse blankets or cushions.

Catalogue
More than seventy Inlaid Patchworks have been found and identified in ten different countries. All objects are illustrated and described in German and English by fifty authors (49,90 Euro).
